Santa takes time out of his busy schedule to feed some of the whitetailed deer at the zoo. Santa has made many appearances at the zoo during the holidays so that children can personally present their Christmas lists. Over the years, the zoo has featured many deer species: whitetail deer, caribou, elk (red deer), sika, muntjac, and fallow deer.

In 1973, the zoo’s resident zebras, Zeke and Zizi, welcomed their first baby, Zelda, who was born on July 6. A new barn was built for camels and zebras two years later to accommodate the growing numbers. This barn is still used and today houses Scottish Highland cattle.
